Minimix at Hotel Megaro

The London Journalist's Christabel Milbanke was excited to check out Minimix at Hotel Megaro, King's Cross, a time-travelling TARDIS-like concept bar that transforms a boring hotel reception desk into a 24-hour ‘social-minibar’ for hotel guests with 7am-12pm opening hours for the general public.

Hotel Megaro, founded by Tony Megaro, is a 50 bedroom 4-star boutique hotel opposite London’s iconic King’s Cross Station notable for its large (450sqM Meters) colourful exterior mural, quirky interiors and penchant for doing things differently.  Their time-travelling conceptual bar Minimix has gone to infinity and beyond to provide an novel solution to the problem of having a hotel full of guests drinking alone...

In place of the usual beers, spirits and snacks in the suite’s minibar, Megaro instead supplies a pair of colourful and cosy designer socks, a good book and most importantly a little Alice in Wonderland-esque note that invites you to drink down a more sociable rabbit hole...

And what could be more sociable than hanging out at the hotel’s reception itself, where fashionable staff (outfitted in Diesel and Doc Martens) effortlessly check in new guests via iPad and invite them in for a welcome cocktail. - Grab a seat on the metallic leather and ‘petrol-blue’ tweed upholstered stools and have a butchers at the new recruits or get matey with the regulars as Minimix takes you on a journey through time and space...

Designed by Paris-born British artist Henry Chebaane (aka H.DD8) the Creative Director of experiential design studio Blue Sky Hospitality, Minimix manages to merge Victorian-era steampunk vibes with prohibition-style methodology. Taking the ‘minibar’ concept to the extreme with staff keen to wow guests with dry ice displays which add to the illusion of being downsized in a giant cooler. But make no mistake, this TARDIS-like drinking hole is most definitely ‘bigger on the inside’ with seating for 24 and enough room for an abstract museum-timeline running from left to right that documents King’s Cross’s interesting history. Originally the biggest holder of gas, coal and ice in Victorian London, King’s Cross was the site of a subterranean ice warehouse that stored imported ice mined in Norway.

The ‘petrol blue’ decor represents the coal and gas which when compressed turns into liquid blue asphalt, and all around the bar you will spy many gas-masked mice (Murphy and his miner friends) hard at work to keep all the cranks and gears going as well as the many on-site distillations which make both deliciously quirky decor and drinks.

My favourite was the extremely heady Silver Bullet, a bargain at just £8, three parts gin and one part Kalmale - a special aniseed liquor sourced from a French family company - curiously served up in a zany science beaker. With a selection of reasonably priced high quality cocktails, as well as beers and mini-bottles of champagne and wine on offer, this self-service bigger-than-life minibar is a must visit for secret-location lovers looking for an intimate but immersive atmosphere with a cosmic old-London twist.

Operations Director Christian Kaberg is a delightful example of old-school hospitality with a new-world mentality. His motto ‘If not now, when?’ is proudly emblazoned on the t-shirts of all the staff, who are encouraged to drink and dine there in order to know and love their product. He kindly invites The London Journalist to join Megaro’s KX Club which, with the flash of a metal rock-and-roll keyring (also a cute homage to Camden band The Clash), gains you special discounts within the Megaro empire.

Special mention goes to the ever-entertaining F+B manager Richard, who much like The Doctor himself, adds a certain je ne sais quoi to the establishment. - You’ll understand, that is, if you are lucky enough to go time-travelling with him...
